From legends and myths let's turn to reality.
The caves of Shargorod are of great interest. The town is situated on the underground
labyrinths where there were mined stones for buildings. All main buildings
of Shargorod of the Middle Ages - the castle, St. Florian's Catholic church, a synagogue,
vassilian monastery - were connected with the help of underground passages. It's a pity,
were is no more information about them. In the last century the historian V. Guldman said
that the underground passages of that town were not investigated. In 100 years everything
remains
the same. In the south of modern Vinnitsa
region very many catacombs were made. In the village of Bronnitsa (Mogiliv-Podilskiy
district) there was found the underground gallery with 1.5 km in lengths. It led to the
Dniester. Nearly the same passage (800 m in lengths was found in the village of Liadava.
During their work the builders came a cross the circular passages in bricks and they
connected to palaces of the Pototskis. Just such passages with the height of 1.8 m are the
most typical. In the village of Markivka (Tomashpil district) the children have found an
ancient bottle with the map of a cave. Underground passages remind about themselves for
several times in Prizhopen, Tomashpil, Gaisin, Murovani Curilivtsi, in the village of
Sobolevka (Teplik district), in the villages of
Mirolubivtsi and Dmitrashivtsi of
Pishchanskiy district. Not less interesting finds were in the localities between the
Khmelnitskiy and Vinnitsa region. Bar castle had there branching system of passages. In
the town of Bar near the modern bus station there was found the entrance to the cave and
the passages went in three different directions. Now they are ruined and closed by the
blockages. The same situation is in Litin, Khmilnik, Stara Siniava, Starokostiantiniv,
Letichiv, Medzhibizh and other vocalities. At the beginning of 1998 the regional press
informed about the expedition to the undergrounds of Khmilnik.
