The Kmity (Alexandrovichi) –
the ancient Ukrainian gentry family of the arms Radvan Podviyniy, which dominated on the
grounds of Kievshchina and Bratslavshchina. Alongside with the
Khimski’s, Slutski’s, Gornostai’s, Kropivnitski’s, Shashkevichi’s, the Kmity’s
represented the elite of south-west of Lithuanian border territory during 200 years. Just
at that period basically there was formed a social structure of the territory,
colonization processes were finished. As Bratslav "zemians" the Kmity became
known, since Boundary-line act of 1431, where one of them represented himself as the
witness. The authors of the "Old Poland" name Olexander Kmita I " The
Cherkassk successor of 1434", and genealogical tradition mentions him as the Head of
Vinnitsa of the times of Svidrigaylo. At the end of XV century the Kmity occupied the
important posts in the governor-general governments of Bratslavshchina and Kievshchina. Kmita II (Matviy) was the governor of
Vinnitsa in 1487-1489, and soon occupied similar posts in Cherkasy, Putivl and Kiev. His
brother - Byk Alexandrovich Kmita "held" Vinnitsa province in 1490-1494. The
third of the family of Kmity - Bogdan/Feodor Alexandrovich carried out the management in
Vinnitsa government in 1500-1501. In XVI century the influence of the Kmity’s on public
life of Bratslavshchina was considerably decreased. However they continued to remain one
of the most powerful families, and got significant land possessions on Snivoda,
constructed a lot of castles. Among them first of all it is necessary to mention Pikovskiy
castle described in 1594 by Erikh Liasota, and the strengthenings in Glinsk, which soon
became the property of the family of Gorski – the relatives of the Kmity’s.
